Ok, you've got the same development environment that I do.

No the generate script doesn't know what javascript variables are in use.
Although the generate.py process is sometimes called "compiling", if you're
used to compiled languages, the term has a different meaning.
You should get the error when you RUN the application. It'll show up in
firefox.
