I've just checked it with a 0.8.2 release and I can't reproduce your issue. 
The color "background-application" is only used at the root, scrollbar corner 
and color popup widget. So I wonder how this can affect the text inside text-
fields. 

Are you sure this is your only local change? What happens if you e.g. use 
another highly visible color like red ("#ff0000")?
