Well, I don't have a classical programming background. Originally I'm a
graphic-designer, but I did a lot of Flash and Web programming too (PHP,
JavaScript, HTML, CSS). As projects became more and more complex, I
decided to study software development. My thesis was completely
unrelated to web-applications. It was a C++ software in the area of
medical image processing.
I was making use of the QT Framework there, which has a lot of
similarities with the GUI classes of qooxdoo. Using a generator (or
compiler) doesn't seem alien at all, it's just an approach that isn't
used frequently in web related areas.

I guess knowing different technologies (or programming idioms) helped me
a great deal. After all, developing a qooxdoo application seemed quite
straight-forward and painless to do.
