Hi Matthew,
first of all, welcome to qooxdoo! Trying to run your code gave me an
error: The layout properties 'row' and 'column' must be defined!
To fix it, simply change the line where you add the label to the grid
layout like this:
this._add(cell, {row: row, column : col});
