Ah, thanks Derrell, that's what I was looking for: that the cross domain uses the script transport, and that transport requires something special to mark it as 'done'. Thanks also for the pointer in the api docs. I was looking in qx.io.remote.Request and qx.io.remote.transport.* but not qx.io.remote itself, where lo and behold, it is explained.
Sure enough, when I serve my entire home directory out of my webserver (not apache though) and turn cross domain off, I actually do get the text response to pop up. Great! Well, I'm sure I'll have more questions as I work more this week on it.
