While I haven't really read up on this thread, sorry, I'd like to remind you of disabling Firebug when debugging transport related issues. Firebug is known to introduce quite some problems, particularly if "Show XXMLHttptRequests" is enabled. One of those annoying issues, which have been around for a while, was fixed just recently. If absolutely requiring Firebug for debugging, you should at least upgrade to the latest 1.4.x or 1.5.x from their website.
