When I try this with internet explorer I get a completely different result. It does execute the echo proc. It looks like FF is sending an OPTIONS request first which is screwing it up. I'm running FF 3.5.3. I will let you know if this is still an issue with RpcExample working from the server. I tried it from localhost accessing RPC on the server and that didn't go well. I found an email in the archives with a similar issue suggesting RpcExample can only be run from the server so I am setting it up there.
