I had this same problem. I've created a scrollable desktop that I am 
planning on making a contrib. There are a few problems with it 
currently, I'll see if I get time to fix these, if not I'll commit as is.

To stop the problems you are getting though you could just set 
allowGrowX and allowGrowY on the desktop to false
