Just curious about the "single Definition" code structure.

Is it the mandatory rule or merely a suggestion ?
My simple experiment reveal that multiple definitions per file is allowed.
(Which is good, since, personally I'm not too crazy about Java-like structure)
But I need some confirmation that this is not a crucial constrain.
