LOL. Just got it. The real reason *somehow* gets swallowed by IE. Placing 
several try/catch blocks deeper in the code tells me:

 "Encoding not supported"

That's because the server seems to use charset set to utf8. Removing the 
charset on the server side makes it work. #@~!
