Hi, We had exactly the same need and ended up hacking these variables in Qooxdoo source to make them protected instead of private. I think that's the only way currently to do what we needed.
It's a pain though because we have to change those everytime we upgrade Qx (I just did that today for the 1.4 upgrade :) Good luck.
