Right. But there are also use cases, where a pure HTML approach is more 
elegant, especially when it comes to display data in a more document-oriented 
manner. Even with Java and SWT, I'm sometimes using a web browser widget to 
display information via HTML.

As soon as you do that, templates are tremendously useful. Like Qooxdoo, 
SproutCore has data binding, and using it in the context of templates is very 
clever. I haven’t seen anyone else do that.
