I think a validator should validate based on the relevant RFC(s) and not
based on "habits".

However, I am not sure how to interpret

        http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1738#section-5

and if http:// is optional or not.

However, I think it is a bad idea to assume that google.com is a shortcut
for www.google.com. Even more so when the http context is missing as well.
