Hi, I couldn't reproduce your assert problem. I see you looked at the source code of qx.ui.basic.Label, if you go to the constructor you will see that it calls setValue too, so I can't imagine how your first case works and the second fails.
if you provide a small zip of a small app that triggers the error i could look into it.
