I'm hoping there is a simple way to change the icons for the entire tree
without having to change each node/leaf individually.

You can bind any icon in your model to the icon property of the tree item. So
use delegation function to bind any property of model item with tree item. By
the way, if want to differ between branch and leaf, leafs should not have any
children property.
