The layer is not only about performance. It also brings in an abstraction and 
convenience.

Yes, that could be true but could also be false. Honestly, I don't know. But 
even if, I don't expect it that much faster compared to the work we would need 
to put in to get the layer out. And again, we could not remove the whole layer, 
only the queueing because most of the other code is convenience for the UI 
layer on top.
