You will still have to go through a registration process for the catalog entry, though. If maintainers are not updating their code, they're not updating. If this happens some people might find it easier to clone on Github, in order to have an own copy which they can fix. But in the end it is rather trivial where you get your copy from. The hard part is the maintenance.
