you can do this through css and qx.bom.element.Style
http://demo.qooxdoo.org/current/apiviewer/#qx.bom.element.Style~set!method_public
First retrieve the targetElement through
var target = widget.getContainerElement();
then
qx.bom.element.Style.set(target,"width","300px");
qx.bom.element.Style.set(target,"height","auto");
