Or maybe to set up a publicly available CI system running contribs and
qooxdoo tests alike, should there be a sponsor available for hardware and
network resources?

(Sorry for answering so late and reopening an ancient discussion, I simply
didn't have time to read this earlier, but I think it's an area of
potentially important improvement, not by necessarily adding much more
value, but adding significant value to qooxdoo's ecosystem - which is IMO a
critical aspect of long term viability of qooxdoo.)

They already do - the demo browser is a good guide of what contribs are
available for what release, although just because a contrib hasn't been
marked as compatible with a particular version doesn't mean it won't work.

The issue is that the timescale for main Qx releases does not necessarily
align with the workload of the contributors, so there's an element of YMMV
if you upgrade a contrib. OTOH, it's a contrib not a proprietary patch
and many contrib'ers are happy to accept patches.

Perhaps the best solution to this would be to encourage contribs to switch
to github so that there is an easy and transparent way to submit patches
to someone else's work
