Hello, seems the setRequired(false) does remove an item from validationManager but I think your problem is with the star* above the label which is confusing for the users.
try to add form.validate(); in your execute event and you'll see items with required set to false are not validated. I don't know :) how to update the labels and remove the star, anyone do?
