*My take-away's from this thread so far:*

Images, CSS(3), fonts are core to the web itself. We need *solid* options
(solid = well documented, non-hack, identified ownership if not part of
core) for ways of utilizing these fundamental design elements in our
qx.desktop apps. 

All solutions offered here were good solutions to my problem (Data uri's,
consolidated and cached images, font icons, etc.) - thank you!

We need to revisit/establish design principles/framework to help us navigate
these types of waters. I will do my best to contribute to this effort.
