qpdfview help
General
qpdfview is a document viewer for files in the portable document format (PDF). It uses the poppler library for rendering and a Qt interface. Additional to standard features it supports opening several documents in separate tabs in the same window.Menus
File Menu
- Open... Opens a dialogue to choose a new file to open in the active tab. If no tabs are open, the file is opened in a new tab.
- Open in new tab... Opens a dialogue to choose files to open in new tabs. New tabs are added to the right of the tab bar.
- Recently used This menu item contains a list of the 5 most recently opened files. Clicking on a file in the list opens it in the active tab unless no tabs are open, when it is opened in a new tab.
- Refresh Reloads the active tab.
- Save copy... Opens a dialogue to save a copy of the file displayed in the active tab.
- Print... Opens the printing dialogue for the file displayed in the active tab.
- Exit Ends the program and closes all active tabs without further dialogue.
Edit Menu
- Next/Previous/First/Last page Displays the next/previous/first/last page of the document in the active tab. Without effect, if the last/first/first/last page of the document is currently displayed.
- Search... Opens a text search dialogue at the bottom of the window. The dialogue remains, if another tab is activated. The search starts if characters have been entered into the search field and no further character is entered for two seconds. A search can be manually started pressing the return key. If a search is currently running when a new search is started, the running search is aborted. If another tab is activated, the search is aborted and the search field is cleared. The search starts on the current page, progresses to the end of the document and then resumes from the beginning of the document until all pages have been searched. As soon as one occurrence of the search term is found, the display jumps to the place of finding. The progress of the search is display below the search dialogue. The search dialogue is closed with the Escape key.
- Find previous/next These options are also available in the search dialogue. If a search has been conducted, jump to the previous/next occurrence of the search term in the document. Without effect, if no search has been conducted. If the currently active occurrence is the first/last in the document, these options will jump to the last/first occurence of the search term.
- Settings... Opens the settings menu.
- Automatic refresh All documents that are opened while this option is activated, are reloaded if they are changed on disk.
- Open URL Enables URL links in all documents. Links may be malicious and will be opened by the default browser, therefore this option is deactivated by default.
- Antialiasing Improves display quality at the cost of performance.
- Text antialiasing Improves text display quality at the cost of performance.
- Text hinting Improves text readability on computer displays.
- Maximum page cache size Sets the maximum size for the page cache. The purpose of this option is to avoid swapping if displaying large documents or working on a system with little memory. The page cache will be automatically increased to hold at least three pages. This can lead to a large cache when viewing a document with large pages on a large scaling. The page cache only presents part of the memory usage of qpdfview, so only part of overall memory usage can be controlled by this option.
- Prefetch distance Sets the number of pages prior to and after the current page to be rendered in advance with a maximum of 10. If the prefetched pages do not fully fit into the cache, the pages prefetched first, including the current page are removed from the cache in the course of prefetching.
View Menu
- Page layout options The first group of 4 options defines the mode of page display. "Two" pages or colums options display two pages in a horizontal arrangement which may necessitate horizontal scrolling depending on window width. The "page(s)" options display only one page in vertical direction at a time, switching to the next page(s) if the bottom of the page(s) is/are reached, while the "column(s)" option displays pages continuously aligned vertically.
- Scaling options The "Fit to page" option chooses scaling such that all pages fully fir into the windows both vertically and horizontally. This may lead to unexpected results (also for the option "Fit to page width") if page size is not uniform. The other scaling options are self explanatory.
- Rotation options These options are self explanatory.
- Toolbars This menu item contains a list of available toolbars which will be displayed at the top of the window.
- Docks This menu item contains a list of available docks. The outline will be displayed on the left border of the window, while thumbnails are displayed to the right. If the scaling is set to a "Fit to..." option, this may lead to rescaling.
- Presentation Activates presentation mode. One page is displayed at a time. The Home key is used to display the first page, arrow keys right and down, space and "page down" keys jump to the next page, arrow keys left and up, backspace and "page up" keys jump to the previous page and the End key jumps to the last page. The Escape or F10 keys can be used to exit presentation mode.
- Fullscreen Activates fullscreen mode, where the window is maximized and the main manu is hidden.
Tab Menu
All the options in this menu are to be understood in relation to the currently active tab. Otherwise they are self explanatory.Help Menu
- Contents Opens this help document.
- About Displays basic information about qpdfview.
Right Click Menu
Via right click on the displayed document the bookmark menu is opened. Bookmarks are lost, when page layout, scaling or rotation are changed, but remain, if the tab is changed. Bookmarks on documents in different tabs can exist at the same time. The same document opened in separate tabs will have separate lists of bookmarks.- Add entry Creates a bookmark at the current vertical position.
- Remove entries on current page Removes all bookmarks on the current page, i.e. the page whose number is displayed at the head of the window.
- Go to previous/next entry Jumps to the vertical position of the nearest bookmark whose vertical position is above/below the currently displayed part of the document. If there is not earlier/later bookmark, this command will jump to the last/first bookmark in the document.
- Clear list Removes all bookmarks.
- Further entries The further entries list all bookmarks in the current tab.
Mark and Copy Text
To mark and copy text, click and hold the left mouse button to drag a frame around the text to mark. Once the mouse button is released, the text is copied into the clipboard. (So no need for CTRL+C.)Mouse Wheel
- The mouse wheel can be used to scroll up and down.
- Holding CTRL while using the mouse wheel scales the document. Note that the options "Fit to page" and "Fit to page width" are always topmost in the list of scalings, also if it is navigated using the mouse wheel.
- Holding SHIFT while using the mouse wheel rotates the document. Note that rotation is cyclic so scrolling down from a rotation state of 270° will yield a rotation state of 0°.
- Holding ALT while using the mouse wheel scrolls sideways if possible.
Command Line Options
For a detailed overview of the command line options please refer to the man page, typing "man qpdfview" in a terminal. If an instance of qpdfview is started with the --unique option, any files that are opened using this option afterwards, are opened as tabs in this same window. If a file is already opened in a tab of the respective window, it is merely reloaded using this option.
