Peter Passchier confirmed that the question is solved:
I had to install some more qt5 dependencies, so I was on qt4.
I have a qtmake (linking to qtchooser) and a qtmake-qt4 (linking to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qmake). So I used
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/bin/qmake and it builds well. I guess that means
that Ubuntu 16.04's qpdfview is also qt5 -- the database was still there.
