According to Eduardo M. A. M. Mendes:

qpopper allows tradionial authentication with "pass" where the password
is transmitted in plain text over the POP channel and also support
"apop" authentication. "apop" is a challenge exchange protocol and
does NOT transmit the shared secred (the password) in plain text. To
use apop you need a compliant mail client e.g. Eudora. Also, you
provider needs to provide a method to store the shared secret on the
POP server.
