I have no clue what I am using. Here is an open question---What should I be
using...I need security plus ease of use - and possibly the ability to have
people change their passwords via a website(in the future)

Any ideas?

"Standard Linux authentication" is much more complex these days.  I
have noticed that some distributions are, by default, using MD5
encrypted passwords rather than 'crypt'-encrypted.  The choice is
greatly extended by the use of PAM.

Do you know what you are using?
