The .user.pop file is *always* created. That file serves two
purposes: it's the temporary spool, and it is a mutual exclusion lock
that prevents more than one POP session for the same user at the same
time.

In server mode, the spool is not copied to the temp drop until the
end of the session, and then only if needed.

There is currently no way to have Qpopper display if server mode is
the default. Keep in mind that server mode can be set on or off as a
compile-time default, a run-time default, based on group membership
of the user, and from a user-specific configuration file. The best
way to know for sure in any given case is to enable debug tracing and
look in the trace file.
