Yes, it's done with a <login>.cache file. qpopper writes the size, timestamp, UIDL and 
position of mails in the maildrop into this file. If the mailbox is not changed till 
the next POP-Request he only needs to grep the data from the cache-File and whooopp
pp you're in in less then a tenth of a second;-)

And the second major(!) change in QPopper 4 is that he moves the maildrop from the 
tempdrop instead of copying it in servermode.

provided with qpopper 4.
