Unable to obtain socket and address of client

new install of qpopper to match new install of qmail...

on:
/usr/local/sbin/popper -s -d qpopper

i get:

Apr 30 13:40:14 baywave /usr/local/sbin/popper[13474]: Unable to obtain socket and 
address of client: Socket operation on non-socket (88)

what does this mean and how can i fix it?
