I'm running on Mandrake 8 and got the same error. I
tried compiling with gcc 2.91.66 (egcs 2.91.66), and
with gcc 2.96 (both are included with Mandrake) and
got the same errors. It seems that tempnam() is not
very secure and gcc went suddenly paranoid about it.
;) Do you guys know any gcc flag to avoid this
checking?? Is qpopper 4.04 going to use mkstemp()
instead? Anyone else having this problem?

You could try to downgrade or install and older gcc
version to compile it (I know it's dirty, but it's a
solution for now). I don't know what the implications
of changing the function itself to mktemp() or
mkstemp() would be to qpopper as a whole, so I won't
mess with that myself...

Good luck,

Gustavo
