Some other suggestions: 1) Can you turn the firewall off and see if your mail clients can then collect mail? This would confirm whether or not the firewall is the issue.
2) Although you logged on and were told you had mail, you have not said whether you successfully retrieved any. Have you ever done this with the firewall running? 3) Can you increase logging, as it sounds like the problem is not currently being logged? This means both firewall and system logging btw. 4) Are you sure that TCP wrappers are not keeping the other workstations out? (Check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny for popper entries.)
