I think it's still more common to access email using a local email program, such as Eudora <http://www.eudora.com>, Netscape <http://www.netscape.com>, or any of the many other fine or nasty ones available. Many people do use a web interface to get to their mail, but in general it's easier, faster, and more powerful to use a special-purpose mail program. To avoid confusing things, you might be better of making sure everything works when you use a mail program, and then trying to set up the web interface.
