Folks,

ok we think we're narrowing down part of the problem.  We currently we have to 
use passwd set at "compat" in /etc/nsswitch.conf

But if we change compat in /etc/nsswitch.conf to "files NIS" things work, but 
for security reasons we need to use compat on our NIS server (also the pop 
server) and therefore we need qpopper to be able to deal with compat otherwise 
it'll seemingly never be able to see the NIS maps.

Or at least that's the closest thing we've been able to find so far.  Any help 
would be appreciated.
