Solved my problem! Thanks to those who wrote, including Michael K. and Andrey P., and most especially Brian H. who figured out what I was missing.
I was missing a + in my shadow file (had one already in the passwd file) so that
qpopper could read the password from the NIS shadow map.
Works just great now.
And now, to get it running with SSL...
