Disk is cheap, yes, but storage bandwidth becomes rather expensive after a certain point. We operate 56 GB of spool for 25000 users and the (dual Ultra Wide SCSI) I/O channels are pretty close to saturation during ofice hours. While we have an extension to 400 GB of mail spool (and dual fibre channel connections into those) in the pipeline, a change in mailbox storage format is unavoidable at some stage and we think we have reached (surpassed) it.
