Add "-C" to your entry in inetd/xinetd.
On my Solaris 8/IA machine, my inetd.conf entry looks like this:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/sbin/popper popper -s -C
(I say "looks like" but that really IS it) If you're using TCP wrappers, it
may look different.
