That is incredibly ancient. I think there might be major remote
security holes in that release, though it's been so long I don't

This sounds like the pop server could be under remote attack; it
would be a good idea to upgrade ASAP, if you haven't already been
rooted.
Upgrade to 4.0.5 and this will solve current known security issues
and many performance problems; if you still have problems then, bring
it back to the list and folks can be more helpful.
