I was finally able to get this to work. Had to pass --with-pam to the configure script and change the header include from <security/pam_appl.h> to <pam/pam_appl.h>

I've tried installing a fresh qpopper install on panther after compiling it but when I try to test it with telnet localhost pop3 it just says:

Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

and kicks me back to the shell. And eudora says TCP/IP Error. -3162; The server is not responding. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? The xinetd entry is set up as:

service pop3
{
        disable = no
        socket_type = stream
        wait = no
        protocol = tcp
        user = root
        server = /usr/libexec/popper
        server_args = qpopper -s -c -C -F
        port = 110
}

which I can only assume is correct.
