Does the BSD core of OSX offer a utility like Solaris' fssnap? I've been
using that for backups successfully on various systems for a year or better.
FYI, and to remain on-topic ;) I have use fssnap on the /var/mail directory
with perfect results. If you're familiar with Windows NTBackup by way of
volume shadow copy, the process is nearly identical. Sendmail, QPopper, and
UW's ipop3d and imapd all continue working, oblivious to the backups, since
we're backing up the snapshot and not the live filesystem.
The alternate approach I've seen on some systems is to just stop the
processes which would access that particular filesystem. An ugly approach,
as far as I'm concerned.
