That's a very old version of qpopper and redhat. Upgrading will solve many more problems.
However, you may be able to fix this by running qpopper with -B option (ignores bulletin db failures)
But.. I'm not sure this option was available in 2.53!

it happens haphazard, seems when users mail box is bigger , it will easy happen.
