I don't recall a problem like that, but there were other problems, such as Panther requiring PAM to authenticate users (it doesn't like daemons getting the shadow password, even if you ask nicely) and a few other things. The later 4.0.6 betas should work out-of-the-box, since ./configure detects if you need to use PAM or not (or at least tries to).
