timeout values and control directory

Is their a value that you can put in qpsmtp that limits the amount of 
time a connection will say active?  Something like

/var/qmail/control/timeoutremote
/var/qmail/control/timeoutsmtpd
If a plugin misbehaves or someone just sits on a an open connection I'd 
like to be able to configure a timeout value.

In the Changes file I see

 Use $ENV{QMAIL} to override /var/qmail for where to find the
 control/ directory.
so should I set

$ENV{QMAIL} = '/var/qmail_in';

in both

qpsmtpd
and
qpsmtpd-server
If setup in this manner would qpsmtp then read the timeout values?
