Yeah, we should be able to do that. Either with a $SIG{PIPE} handler or just by checking if fileno() is still valid or something. Might be hard to do in a cross-platform way though (and I also mean a way that's compatible between forkserver, tcpserver and Apache::Qpsmtpd).
Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of time to look into it right now.
