I don't remember the state of forkserver in 0.28, but CVS HEAD is very stable at the moment, and hopefully pretty soon Robert or Ask will cut a 0.29 release. There have been lots of changes/improvements since 0.28, however, so you should definitely run CVS head over continuing to use 0.28.
