Hmmm, that's an interesting idea, but it only works because of the current architecture. A little birdy told me (Hi Matt!) that the internals are being rewritten to be poll friendly, so I'd be loath to apply this before 0.29 was cut.
Actually I'm fine with this change. I was thinking of doing something similar myself.
