There is a difference between checking input for sane values and being completely paranoid. I think you are verging on the latter. In practice, it is enough to ensure that the value /looks/ like an IP address, since there will only be an LDAP service on an actual server (not just some random IP). An administrator is expected to key lots of non-public information into configuration files (in general); if the admin fails in this task, they are the one who will suffer the consequences. It isn't qpsmtpd's business to prevent an admin from shooting him/herself in the foot (like I did when I created a routing loop).

I have no idea what you are talking about here; I have been using ReiserFS for at least two years now and I have never had to manually interact during the boot sequence (even due to a loss of power failure). I think there is something seriously wrong with your system...
