I'm pretty sure doing the virus checking (and spamassassin if you use that) easily trumps the load that qpsmtpd creates.
qpsmtpd might help by being more effective in rejecting mail quickly (check_early_talker alone says bye-bye very quickly to quite a few viruses for example) and save you the extra processing. Your current setup has a capacity advantage in having the queue.
