I do this too. I don't see the difference between copying a plugin
foobar to foobar_new and modifying it and copying it to plugins.loca (or
whatever) and modifying it. Other than the additional complexity and
potential for confusion ("Plugin foobar loaded." - now, is that in
plugins.local or plugins?)
