It might also be interesting to hold them down for a longer period of time
if they continue to connect repeatedly after the soft fail.
I've seen at least one plugin doing something like that while I was googling
qpsmtpd pre-installation; so it shouldn't be too hard for you to find it.

Personally I'm considering firewalling some spamsources for a short period
of time, or at least rate-limit them (using iptables).
