I forgot to mention that I also tried manually inserting an additional "-arch x86_64" into CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and LFLAGS in the Python subdirectory Makefile. This supposedly builds a universal binary with both 32bit and 64bit code (or so I read). The libs build but emitted the same error I was getting before.
