Without disrespect to Bob, who does lots more creative stuff than me (I am using his Pivot Stickfigure Animator tutorial starting tomorrow with my Comp Sci class, and will be using his VisioModeller tutorial with my IPT class later this semester, so I owe him big-time), all I meant by industry standard is that Photoshop (and other packages in the Adobe suite such as InDesign) are almost universally the software of choice by graphic designers and photographers. No value judgment is implied by this statement - other software might be better - it was just a statement of what is used in the industry.
Having said that, I have never heard of GimpShop, which sounds intriguing to say the least, and will certainly be investigating it in the near future, so thanks, Bob, for flagging this. It commonly means "I do not want to make the effort to analyse the situation," or even "I do not know enough to analyse and I just want to copy other people" or sometimes "I do not want the effort of preparing my own teaching materials". Can you tell that I have had altercations on matters like this at my school? PhotoShop costs real money. If you want "industry standard" without the cost, use GimpShop instead of Gimp. GimpShop is Gimp with a PhotoShop front end. We use it successfully. There are tutorials available for free on the web.
